Using Popular Songs to Improve
English Listening Skill for Secondary School Students

listening skill is the importance skill for EFL students, but most students
faced that English listening skill is the hardest skill for them. Thus, popular
songs were used in this study to improve English listening skill and motivate
secondary school students. The purposes of this research were to compare
results of English listening skill before and after using popular songs.(2)to
compare students’ learning motivation before and after using the popular songs.
Thereswere36secondary school students from Kantharawichai School, Mahasarakham
province, Thailand participated in this study. All of samples were selected by
cluster random sampling. The instruments consisted of learning instruments
(popular songs and four listening lesson plans) and compilation data
instruments (pre–post tests and learning motivation questionnaires). Data was
carefully analyzed by used of mean, standard deviation, and dependent t-test.
The results were (1) 25.56 was the result of comparing English listening skill
before and after using popular songs, (2) 3.12 was the result of comparing
learning motivation before and after using popular songs. Accordingly, using
popular songs in class improved English listening skill. Moreover, popular
songs motivated students to learn enthusiastically and to do activities
enjoyably.
